AUTOMOTIVE SUBSTITUTION

LUBRICATION POINTS. With the ever increasing popularity of the motor car, large sums are being expended every year by motorists j for supplies of lubricating oil and pet-! rolj.' Over 50 per cent of the troubles in the present-day car can be traced directly to inefficient lubrication, and we feel that the car owner should have every protection when purchasing supplies. Sometimes a purchaser demands a high-grade lubricant of a well known brand and grade, which he knows is correct for price, after being led to believe by some unscrupulous dealer that he is getting what he asked for. Sometimes a purchaser is at fault by simply asking for “A," “BE,” etc. That is not sufficient as these are merely letters used to designate the Various grades. The purchaser should make a practice of specifying the brand and grade he requires, and he has every. right to be supplied with it. If he supplied with something else without a {proper fexplanartion, that is substitution, and the deception is misrepresentation. Recently this matter was the subject of a conference of the Commonwealth of 'Automobile Organisations, and it was decided:—(l) “That the attention of the authorities be directed to’.the practice of certain vendors supplying _ low- grade ■':p®trdi -and olKas-ffirst ’graded and/that . for .the protection of motorists, action i be taken under-the Weights and Measures Act and Sales of Goods Act in each State” (2) “That it is desirable and essential that the brand of the petrol and oil be displayed on the "pumps.” This is undoubtedly a move in the right direction. A similar arrangement in New Zealand would ensure a., fair deal and be a boon and a blessing ■ to the motorist. ' The Gisborne Oil Proprietary, which is about to bore for oil in the Poverty Bay district, has now definitely decided the location, which will be on Dodshun’s station, a few miles from Buatorea. Gear is now being landed on the site, but owing to the amount of work necessary prior to boring, it is unlikely that drilling will be com-* menced before the end of April, Geologists are now deciding on, the second location, and it is probable that the two wells will be. sunk at the same time. An incident in which a colossal impudence was displayed is reported from the new tennis courts of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association, at Miramar. Two young men visited the ground on a recent evening, evidently with the intention of playing a game, but on arrival found that the courts were not in use, so departed, disappointed but not dismayed. They returned on the following evening after the workmen had finished the day’s toil, and while the caretaker was not about, erected their own net, placed their own posts (pieces of, 4in x 2in) into the holes, and began a game with a low net. It was only by chance that the caretaker happened to glance out of his .window, and noticed figures moving on the courts. He , then investigated, and found that the two men had taken charge of the courts and were enjoying themselves. Their explanatioh of their ■ action was anything but convincing, as they were not members of the association, nor of any clubs in the city. Advertising does help sell goods, bnt the thing it does that is of even greater importance is to get people acquainted with these goods—lets them know they exist. }
