How fho squandering of the money of his victim led to the arrest of a murderer was described at the Marne Assizes,, when Andre Hamard, a young bandit, was sentenced to death for the I murder of Mdlle. Leroy, a wealthy recluse. Hamard was temporarily working for .Mdlle. Leroy, when ho shot her, stole her keys and took 1,200,000 francs in bank notes and 1200 francs in gold from the safe. He then indulged in a riot of extravagance, but lost half of the money, being robbed by 'a chance acquaintance. After this he spent money on a girl until he was bored, when ho bought a motor car. In this he toured France with a youth and a chauffeur. His reckless expenditure attracted ! attention at Bordeaux, where he claimed that his father was a wealthy man. The police, however, discovered that i his parents wore poor. They then • easily linked up . Hamard with the murder, which he confessed. —A. and N.Z.
