Power Boat Association's fleet was chiefly engaged last Saturday at a'club picnic held at Onetaunga Bay, near Kauri Point. The Oleo returned on Friday evening from a fortnight's cruise to Kawau and the Great Barrier. Although there was plenty of shelter in the harbours at the Barrier, most of the long runs were made in fairly rough weather. The party "enjoyed some splendid fishing. » * * » The Ranoni returned on Monday from a pleasant cruise to Wkangaruru and on to Cape Brett. The party comprised Messrs D. Main, E. Reed and H. Culpan. While at Cape Brett they saw Zane Grey catch three swordfish. Last Monday there were 10 launches at Cape Brett with deep-sea anglers aboard fishing, for swordfish, mako and reremai sharks. ROWING Waitemata, North Shore, ,St. George's (2 crews) and Auckland competed in the annual non-class race for the Smith Shield last week-end. Waitemata led half way over the course, but in a fine finish the Auckland crew —R. Staeey, R. Chappell, A. Coutts and T. Morgan—forged ahead and won by a narrow margin, from Waitemata —H. Cullen, A. Stewart, W. J. Lowe and C. Hunt. The St. George's four —V. Hargreaves, T. Hargreaves, Porter and Hansen—was third. * * m w Since the Smith Shield for interclub non-class fours was first raeed tn Auckland in 1914, Waitemata and West End have won the trophy four times each, St. George's twice, and North Shore, Hamilton, and Auckland once apiece. ».* * * Oarsmen in Canterbury have had bad luck with regard to regattas this year. Both Redcliffs and Lyttelton regattas fell through for lack of support. The weather was too severe to enable the Akaroa Club to hold its regatta, and the latest blow is that the Lake Forsyth and Wellington fixtures clash. * * » » In the final of the single sculls handicap for the Reed Cup, competed for by members of the Whangarei Whangarei Rowing Club, J. As the inducements offered by the Dargaville Regatta Club compare more than favourably with those at Mercer and Ngaruawahia it is expected that i Auckland clubs will be well represent- j ed on Northern Wairoa next Saturday. SWIMMING M. Christie, F. Doyle and Keith Kirk laud have been sent formal invitations by the council of the N.Z.
