The Gresham Singers (male quartet) are in good form in their unaccompanied items, "London Town" (Edward German) and " Heartache > ' (Max Resrer). There is no composer to whom on© would more readily entrust the task of writing about "London Town" than that most English of musicians, Edward German; and if the-Gresham Singers' excellent diction leaves no doubt that he considers it a town he is "glad to hurry through." well, he is not alone in his opinion! Roger's song is in a different vein, a poignant heart cry that it is impossible to hear unmoved.

The new gramophone, which Sir Edward Elgar declares to be the most important invention in gramophone history, has been evolved by the cooperative effort of more than 100 workers in the research department of His Majesty's Voice gramophone company, at Hayes. Its effect i 9 to put every existing gramophone out of date, because orchestral instruments, which, hitherto, have been either indistinct or not heard at all, are now for the first time reproduced at their true value. The old type of machine will not trap the lower notes and the problem before the research workers was to adjust the balance so that bass and treble would be in their right relation. They carried out their experiments on a scries of speciallymade records, each of which had a complete range of notes from the musical instrument that was being tested, and the result is a machine with a new tone-arm, a new soundbox, and a special tone-chamber, which gives equal prominence to the whole scale, from low baßs to high treble.
