FURTHER OUTBREAKS VICTORIAN CALAMITY. RAIN THE ONE SALVATION. (Received 12.37 p.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Owing to the hot weather further ■outbreaks of bush fires have occurred. The village of Greendale is in a perilous position, and urgent appeals for assistance "have been sent out. Should the wind veer to the- north it will wipe out the village completely. ' Heavy grass and bracken country is in the path of the fire, portion of "which, is making towards Bacchus Marsh. ' Anxiety is caused in Hey wood and •district by large fires approaching the 'township. Nothing but rain can save the situation. The- Rubicon forest fire is extending. Timber has been destroyed which would have accommodated 20 mills. Chief interest is now centred in fhe splendid spontaneity of relief which is being offered from all directions and from all classes. Clothing, boots, money and other offers are deluging the central depots. The response has been, striking in connection with fhe care of children while their parents are endeavouring to rehabilitate their homes. The amount contributed now stands ; at £62,000. A number of unions have struck levies. A special intercession service was conducted by Archbishop Lees, .who offered up praydrs for relief of the sufferers and for rain.
