SOUTH AFRICAN AVIATION
GERMAN MACHINES AND FINANCE. UNENVIABLE DISTINCTION. (Received 2.12 p.m.) . , CAPETOWN, February 16. South Africa will probably soon have the distinction of being the only British Dominion to run civil aviation by German machines financed by a German firm. Th© Union invited tenders from overseas, based, on a subsidy of £BOOO annually, which will be embodied in next year’s estimates. British firms offered to tender provided the subsidy was £45,000. Junkers tendered and the Air Board decided that the machines are suitable, but stipulated that the service would not be accepted unless South Africans were trained to fly the machines; In the, event of war, the Government will commandeer the machines. .The contract will be reviewed at the end of the year. The framing of the contract was delayed owing to not responding to a cable for guarantees. The .public is asking if the Germain Government is {subsidising. tliVe service.—A. and N.Z.
