INCINERATION HORROR

FIVE MAORI CHILDREN.

INEXPLICABLE OCCURRENCE

KAIKOHE, This Day. The ' adjmirned inquest concerning the deaths of the live Maori children as the result of a fire that destroyed their parents' residence at Awarua on the evening of November IS was concluded at Kaikohe before Mr T. Guerin, J.P., and a jury of four. Keiti Wi Tari, the mother of the children, stated that there were neither candles nor kerosene in the house on the night of the fire, and there were only a few smouldering embers in the fireplace when she left to attend the evening service at the Mormon Church half a mile away. She told the children to go to bed as darkness came on. There was a distinct understanding that the children were never to have a light at any time. The father, Wi Tari, said he could not offer any suggestion as to how the fire originated. A verdict was returned in accordance with the evidence.
