PLANT IMPROVEMENT
WORK OF THE HORTICULTURAL INSTITUTE. The practical work of the Institute of Horticulture "Is- already affect 1117 the t-vpes of some of the fruit trees being propagated in Xew Zealand. Within the last four years no less than (50,000 selected apricot buds, guaranteed as to type and name, have been distributed 'ov the Teviot branch of the Institute to the stone fruit nurserymen. This season fully 00 per cent, of all the ay.ricot trees planted in the orchards of the Dominion will be from these selected buds. During the last year or two the Institute, through the Association of Nurserymen and the Citrus Association, has started citins bud selection and improvement in earnest. Last venr quite a number of buds was selected and distributed, and during th» coming season it is expected that a large proportion of the buds used will be from the Institute's selected stcck. Already one propagator has intimated that he will use 4000 selected citrus buds, most of which will be of leading varieties of lemons.
