MARUA NEWS.

HALL COMMITTEE DANCE. The Mania Hall Committee held a very successful dance in the local hall on Fridajr evening. Many visitors from Whangarei, liikurangi, Whananaki, Opuawhanga, Matapouri and Otonga were present. So popular have these dances become that the committee intends holding them monthly. The floor was in excellent order and the music supplied by Mrs J. Cunningham (violin), Messrs Smith (piano), J. Cunningham (cornet), C. Cunningham (euphonium) and Munro (double bass) was all that could be desired. Many dances were encored and encored again. Mrs Swinbourne and Mr J. Neale played extras.

The Ladies' Committee supplied an excellent supper. This very enjoyable occasion was brought to a close in the early hours of the morning. BLEAK AND WET. The weather is still capricious. Morning breaks with promises of n fine day, but before noon rain falls. It has been much colder, with winds blowing from the south-east and southwest. MISADVENTURE. Last Wednesday evening Mrs Cook, her sister, Miss M. Campbell, and Mr McKay were driving out from Hikurangi when, on reaching the top of the hill, a dog jumped down off the bank and frightened the horse, which swerved off the road and went down the hillside. Mrs Cook and Miss Campbell were thrown out and sustained a good shaking, Miss Campbell's face being bruised. Mr McKay remained in the gig and escaped injury. A shaft of the gig was broken, but the horse escaped injury. A passingmotorist picked up the shaken party and conveyed them home.

j ROAD IMPROVEMENTS. A gang of men are at present engaged in quarrying metal for the roads. Some of the culverts have been tahen up and new ones piit in their places and some of the road has been metalled from McPhec's bridge towards Whananaki. This is a great improvement, for some places on the road were becoming quagmire* with the contiu- . nous rain and constant traffic. PEI.SONAL, Miss Campbell who has been visiting her sister. 'Mi's Cook, returiled to J Auckland on Saturday. Mr Mc.Phee ii.is returned from Aiick- : land. Mr Warren, inspector of schools, visited the local school on Monday.
