GENTLEMEN'S RECOVERY. SENSATIONAL BATTING. (Received 2.15 p.m.) LONDON, July 9. The achievement of Allen and Haig in the Gentlemen versus Players match at the Oval was the sensation of the week. The first wicket put on 113. Then Tate took five wickets for 37. Tennyson brilliantly stopped the rot, hitting, one six and nine fours. When Haig joined Allen, however, the Gentlemen required 37 to save the followon. Both batsmen played with the greatest caution, though generally they are hitters, and refused to take risks. There was a hurricane of cheering when the Players' total was passed. Each batsman was then 90. Haig was snapped up at the wickets when two short of the century, but Allen still has a chance.
