A FLOURISHING SPORT

The presence of more than 200 members of the Whangarei Racing Club at the annual meeting last night betokens the existence of a very live interest in a branch of sport, that is making headway in this district. In spite of the complaints from other parts of the Dominion that the North received too large a share of the new totalisator permits allocated this year by the Minister of Internal Affairs, we still think that Whangarei was awarded less than its share, for this district is the centre of the North, its racihg is well conducted, and ag the most important, club in the North the Whangarei Racing Club ,is an institution that can do rcfuch. .up the sport an*}, assist the smaller clubs. The more .'it is strengthened by the allocation of permits the better it will be aisle .to serve the inter- . ests of the sport in a large area. But if Whangarei has not yet received all that it should have, the allocation of the one new permit this year has evidently stimulated the interest of those who support racing. This Tesult is entirely gratifying, for the Racing Club must be. benefited by the activity of the very large proportion of its members who discharged their duty ,by attending last night's meeting. It is' altogether a good thing for the chosen few in whom the executive control of the, club's affairs is vested to realise that, they are representing some hundreds qf keen sportsmen, who are ready to appreciate the good work of the committee as they are to assist by the expression of their views on matters of importance. Under such conditions the members who were elected to office last night should be inspired to do Well for the club. They are led by a ptesident who has had long experience and has done fine work for the club. Mr Hosking indeed has spared no efforts in the interests of racing in this district and has thoroughly ' earned the great compliment that the members paid him in re-elect-ing liim as they did. The vice-presi-dent, a keen sportsman and a real | lover of horses, .'and the, committee form, with the president, a strong body, under whose care the affairs of the club should flpurish. The total outcome of a very notable meeting is certainly to enhance the prospects >of a sport that msikes a very wide appeal.
