MURDER OF MARRIED COUPLE. ASSAILANT'S SUICIDE. (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, June .20. At an inquest into the death of the Cnrlys a verdict was returned that Dryden murdered the pziir and then committed suicide while of unsound mind. The Coroner said that the wounds on the ' murdered couple looked as if they had been inflicted by a wild beast. —A. and N.Z.

On June 10 a double tragedy occurred in the early morning at Benamleight, a private hotel, in Streatham. A maid found the proprietor, Mr Jas. Carly, aged 60 years, dead in liis bedroom, and his wife, aged 54 years serio.usly injured in her room. She succumbed to the effects later. Both Mi" and Mr Carly had their heads battered. All the gas jets on the ground floor had previously been found fully turned on. The guests would soon have been in danger of asphyxiation. The dead man's supposed brother, Dryden Carly, aged 45 years, Was found dead, hanging a bearii in the hotel garage. The:'two men shared a. room in the basement, Mrs Qaprly • having a room to herself. It was later discovered that Dryden Carly was not James' brother. He was believed to be a South African man who fought in the Great War and suffered from nerves. It was suggested he first tried to commit suicide by gas poisoning.
