WHANGAREI HARBOUR BOARD

YESTERDAY'S MEETING,

The Wlaangarei Harbour Board met yesterday. Present: Messrs. D. W. Jack (chairman), J. A. Finlayson, W. •Jones, J. D. McKenzie, Jas. D. McKenzie, E. Swann, W. M. Fraser (engineer) and J. McKinnon (secretary). WORKS COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS. The Works Committee's report and recommendations were presented as follows:— BOAT SLIP. The engineer submitted plans an I ■estimates of building a boat slip in stone or wood. In stone the work was estimated to cost £500, and in wood £440.

After discussion it was resolved on the motion of Mr. J. D. McKenzie, seconded by Mr. Finlayson, that the work of constructing the boat slip in rock be proceeded with.

On Mr. Hosking's motion it was agreed that tenders be obtained for supplying the rock required for the above works, and that the dredging of the site be proceeded with..

LAUNCH JETTIES,

The question of constructing suitable launch jetties 011 the foreshore of the reclamation works above Victoria bridge was considered, and it was re-

solved 011 the motion of Mr. Hosking, that tlie matter be referred to the chairman and engineer of the Boarl to confer with the Whingarei Cruising Club and others interested in the matter of launch jetties, with a view to ascertaining their requirements, and the probable number of jetties that would be rented, and report to

the next meeting of the Board. It was suggested that the annual rent for ;such jetties be fixed at £3 per annum per launch.

It.: was resolved on the motion of Mr. J. D. McKenzie, seconded by Mr. Jas. D. McKenzie, that applications be called for renting launch jetties alt an annual rental of £3 for each launch, and if it was found ithalt the cost of the jetties would be lesß than the estimated cost of their construction, that the Board would consider the question of reducing rerft charges. STAKING BRANCH CHANNELS. The question of staking branch channels in £he harbour which had previously been sanctioned by the Board, was recommended to be proceeded with. PATTERSON'S JETTY. On the motion of Mr. Finlayson, it was resolved that Patterson's jetty be tepaired at a cost of about £15. MAORI HOSTEL SITE. The chairman reported that Mr. G. H. Woods, had waited on him regarding the Board's promise for exchange of part of Hihiaiia Block for other property of the Board, for a hostel site. The chairman had explained the position to the Judge of the Native Land Court, who deferred consideration of recommending an exchange until the Board had further considered the matter. Native Land Amendment and Native Land Claims Adjustment Act 1.917, dealing with the ex-elusion of portion of the Hihiaua Block from the second schedule to the Whangarei Harbours Act 1907.

After discussion it was resolved on the motion of Mr. Hosking, seconded by Mr. Finlayson, that the chairman, deputy chairman, engineer, the chairman of the Maori Council and Mr. G.

IT. Woods inspect a site as -shown on plan of the endowment and report their recommendations on the matter to the next meeting.

The chairman subsequently reported that a. confernoee had been held with Mr. G. H. Woods and the Natives with regard to providing the site for the hostel in exchange for the land in the Hihiaua Block. The snb-commit-tee recommended that half an acre of the Board's endowment next to Dundas .Road, and fronting the main Wha-ngarei-Onerahi road, be given to the. Natives for a hostel, in exchange for an aero and a half in the Hihiaua Block.

On the motion of Mr. J. D. McKenzie, seconded by Mr. Jones, it was re-

solved that the Board adopt the sub committee's recommendation.

DEEPENING MANGAPAI CHAN NEL.

The chairman brought up the question of deepening the Mangapai channel leading to the Portland wharf. Mr. Wilson, works manager, had waited on ! him urging that something be done J to deepen the channel. , The engineer submitted a plan showing a proposal to deepen the channel to 17 feet 1.w.5.t., which he estimated , would cost £5000, aiid if deepened to 20 feet l.w.s.t. the estimate was

The chairman reported that the engineer and he had visited Auckland and conferred with the chairman and the engineer of the Auckland Harbour Board re hire of a bucket dredge for deepening the Mangapai channel. The engineer submitted a.statement showing tlie cost of hire of dredge No., 121, but the question of disposing of the spoil had to be considered before negotiations could be completed for hire of the dredge. After discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Messrs. Jones and Jas. D. McKenzie, that the engineer submit a scheme, with plan, to the Marine Department, showing where it is proposed to deposit the dredge spoil and when consent had been obtained from the Department that the chairman and engineer finalise negotiations with the Auckland Harbour Board for hire of its dredge on the terms submitted to them at the ; r recent in- j terview. j

The Runnnga Borough Council wrote asking the Board to support legislation to provide pensions for the victims of infantile paralysis. It was resolved to receive the communication. , WASHING-UP BILL. The Marine Department forwarded n circular stating that nothing of a contentious nature should "be included in clauses of the Washing-up Bill, which should be dealt with by a local Bill. The letter was received. PURCHASE OF PROPERTY. Messrs W. A. CarrutTi and Son forwarded c: draft deed of sale of Lot 12, Kioreroa, at £10 per .acre, from the Whangarei High School Bofj-rd to the Wliangarei ITarbour Board. On the motion of Mr Swann it was resolved that the chairman and Mr W. Jones, along with the secretary, execute the deed.

STRAY CATTLE,

It was agreed that the chairman and staff should deal with the question of cattle grazing 011 the -Board's newly acquire 1 property and removal of stock which was damaging the Board's reclaimed lands at Limeburner's Creek. SPORTS GROUND RECLAMATION.
