MOTOR CARRIAGE.
MADE IN DOMINION. A motor carriage which has been tted out at the. Addington Railway Workshops with a view to experimental passenger runs on Canterbury lines was given a trial run last week. The carriage, an ordinary secondclass passenger car, has been fitted with a Hudson Super Six motor, which can be operated from either end of the carriage. The only points of difference that distinguish the carriage from the ordinary passenger car of its type are the presence of a cow-catcher at each end, and the control boxes and a wind screens on the platforms. The engine is fitted laterally under the car floor about the centre, and is connected to one of the axles by a driving shaft. A special type of dual crown wheel is used. A gas tank, usually fitted to carriages for supplying light, has been converted into a petrol tank, and has a capacity of fifty .gallons. This quantity, it is estimated, ie sufficient for a run from Christchurch to Dunedin and back.
The controls are so designed that it will not be possible for anybody but the driver to operate them. In addition, it is impossible for anyone to interfere with the car from the reverse end, as onlv the controls at one end cf.n be unlocked ,it one time.
