' Much alarm has been caused by thd outbreak of a mysterious epidemic in the Middle W6st districts. Therfl have been 2500 new cases in the pastl fortnight, 900 resulting in death. lai some districts the percentage of deaths reached 70. The. - epidemic is apparently in thflj form of sleeping sickness. The vie* tims, who are m'ostly elderly, fall intg a dpzfc from which it is impossible tpj awaken them, finally dying. Bacteriologists; so far have beeq( unable to trace the source, but believa it is a form of spinal meningitis.
