A particularly favourable opportunity for the investment of savings is afforded by the Whangarei Borough Council's issue of debentures. Sums of £100 and multiples of £100 are accepted by the Council and 5J per cenr. interest is paicl on each £100, the payments being made every six months. There are no expenses attached to the lending of money to the borough and no troublesome formalities to comply with. The lender simply hands over a cheque or cash and takes away the debentures, to which interest coupons are attached. Though the debentures are for 20 years, this need not mean that the lender's capital is tied up for that period, for the, debentures arc always saleable. It is far wiser to put money into debentures than to leave it idle, or only earning a small return.
