ALLEGED BANK ROBBERY.
TELLER BEFORE THE COURT

The hearing has commenced in the Police Court of the charge of theft against Ohittoek, teller in the Canterbury branch of the Commercial Bank, . Detective Clugston gave evidence that 1 Chittock told a story regarding the bank robbery which would not bear ' investigation. I The manager of the bank repeated the facts previously reported. A cabled message on August 9 stated; "As a sequel to the recent robbery at the Canterbury branch of the Commercial Bank, William Chittock, who was the teller at the bank, has been arrested and charged with the theft of £- r >22. The story given at the time was that when the manager, Mr Morgan, arrived at the bank in the morning he found that the telephone was out of order and he was called to answer a message on a neighbouring shop telephone. As he left, Chittock entered the building, and was confronted by an armed man. In a struggle with the intruder Chittock was shot in the hand and the foot, and Ms j aesailant escaped through the back I door."
