THREE AMERICAN STATES. anthrax Savages. HUMAN BEINGS INFECTE& ~~ NEW YORK, July 30, A message from the representative <s£ the United Press Association at Mem--,phis, Tennessee, states that an epidemic? jof anthrax is . now sweeping Arkanf sas, and. Mississippi. It | has caused the deaths of 20 persons and i more than 10,000 head of live stock. The State and Federal officers, are mobilising; all means available in an endeavour to efceck the scourge.- An inter-State conference has been called to devise .methods of combating the plague and centralising the demands upon "Washington for emergency relief-' appropriations;. The local authorities are faced by further difficulties because the negroes refase to bury the dead animals lest they themselves should contract the disease. Special ordiaances Save been passed requiring that cfcad animals shall be burned, together with the waggons jn which they ha>ve been moved. All persons capable of administering antitoxin tto animals have been pressed into service.. The authorities- state that the disease is spread from" the carcase T>y flies, dogs, and vultures^—A., and' N.Z.
