OUT OF CONTROL

CAR CRASHES INTO PEOPLE. ONE KILLED OUTRIGHT. SEVERAL OTHERS MAIMED. WELLINGTON, This Day. A shocking accident occurred in the upper end of Dixon Street yesterday afternoon. A crowd of wedding guests were waiting outside the entrance gate of St. John's Church to jiieet the bride and bridegroom when one of the wedding ears standing further up the street, which is very steep and dangerous at this point, got out of control and ran down the hill. Taming inwards and running on to the footpath at the kerb it struck a body of guests, nearly all woinen, and crashed onwards to a concrete wall.

Miss Scatchard was killed, three were very seriously injured and two othc-is were injured more or less seriously. The injured include Mrs Witts, of Petone. Mrs Hall, of Newtown, Mrs Toomer ai'd Mrs F. Wheeler. The best man, Mr Collins, of Petone, and several others were slightly injured.

The bride and bridegroom, Mr and Mrs James Spence, had left by the first car and it was the second car which got out of control. —Press Assn.

VERY STEEP SLOPE. A SUDDEN SWERVE. WELLINGTON, This Day. The car which ran away contained the best man, Mr Collins, two bridesmaids and two little girls. It was parked on a very steep slope above the church and as soon as the driver, J. Pickford, released the brakes to follow the bride's car his own car jumped the kerb and dashed on the footpath. The bridegroom's young brother was pulled out of the way jusi in -time, but Miss Scatchard, a close friend of the bride, was killed instantly. Mesdames Toomer, Wilts and Wheeler were 'taken to hospital, where the last two are still ill, the extent of their injuries not being known. Mr Collins was injured in the face, but neither he nor the others were seriously hurt.
