CHiyBS. Calves are perennial greens belonging to the onion family and native of England- and other parts of Europe. They grow in dense tufts and have small bulbs and rush-like hodow-leaves. The young leaves have beer, much esteemed in spring as a change or substitute of the onion for saly.ds. Being pareunia] in liabit it is possible to cutbunches at intervals. The leaves are much milder than those of the anion, and on that account may be eaten by those who dislike ft strong onion flavour. Chives are v;iy easy to grow once* a stock has been obtained; any good ordira-ry soil will Jo. They may be* grown in tufts in the herb patch or as an edging to a seeiion of the vegetable gar Jen.
