HISTORIC GATES AT WEMBLEY.
Of all the exhibits at Wembley, none has a more romantic and tragic history than the pair of wooden gal es set up in He Palace of Beauty. They are copus of the sacred gates of the Teheran Mosque, and were made by er poor Persian wood-carver, who defied the decree that they, were r.ot to be copied. Each day he made a pilgrimnge 1o the mosque committee! some detail to memory, jmd then went home and wrought it in the wood. But his visits caused suspicion to fall upon him, he '-vas watched, his secret, discovered, and, on the completion of his task, he weis found murdered, anl hi;; work disappeared. Presently the cutes came into the hands of Persian dealers, who sold at a sacrifice rather than keep them and at length they were recognised in a small London "curio" shop, and are one of Wembley's multitude of attractions.
