With a view to closing thrf Bciekaknriki hill for heavy traffic during the winter months—May to Ser.tember--> the Hutt County Council passed a special by-law which, in the event of a prosecution for a breach, micJe provision for a minimum fine of £5. That failure to comply with the regulations is £<>ing to prove i-n expensive business for the offenders concerned w,a.s shown in the Magistrate's Court, when several carriers were charged with carrying - more than one and a half tons per pair of wheels ov.t the hill. j Fines of £5 were imposed in five cases, decision in the otiier rases being reserved.
