THE DAIRY MARKET.

Cabled news from London yesterday was to the effect that at the end of last week the market for butter was quiet, the price ranging from 166s to 168s per- cwt., and the'cheese market wa3 also quiet, but steady, at 82s to 83s. In spite of t'he quietness of the market last week there was an advance in the price of the finest New Zealand salted butter, the difference as compared with the previous week being 4s. During the past four weeks the price ha? ranged from 164s to 1725, but the lower price ruled only for a little while. Danish butter shows no change at 1845.' Two weeks ago ths price was 208s, owing to German purchases. The present price of 184s shows a better relation to New Zealand butter, although the difference .of lCs per cwt. is still rather wide. Australian butter has risen 4s per cwt. to 15Ss, in sympathy with New Zealand butter. The cheese market lias steadied at 82s to 83s, which haa beeu the quotation for the last three weeks. I'our weeks ago the price ranged from 84s to 80s. There is reported to be :i fair demand, and as factories are releasing small lots of stored cheese, there* should be no difficulty in maintaining present values until the heavy European and Canadian makes come on the market. Canadian cheese is quoted, at 80s, c.i.f., which is '{high enough to prevent the prices : ";for the New Zealand product going lo'wer. A year ago New Zealand cheese >vas quoted at 84s to 86s, so that -present quotations of 82s to S'As are not unreasonable. At the corresponding- date last year New Zealand salted butter was quoted at 1425, so that dairy farmers arc now receiving 26s above lust year's price. Australian butter quotations compared with last year show an advance of 245, and Danish butter an advance of .°>2s, compared with last year. The butter market just now is in a 'healthier condition than it was a. year ago.
