INSURANCE RISKS.
BOROUGH COUNCIL ACTION-
BALLOT FOB TWO YEARS' PERIOD
The town clerk reported to last night's mooting- of the Whangurei Borough Council that the placing of the insurance risks of the Council would require attention before August 24, as the late Council had considered the matter and had resolved that all risk 3 should expire on that date, before which the disposal of same would be considered by the Council.
Cr. A. T. Brainsby suggested that unless the placing of the risks was restricted to those offices paying rates in the borough, the whole of them should be placed with the State office.
Cr. L. J. Brake thereupon moved that the whole of the risks be placed with tho Government office.
Cr. P'. G. W. Tibbits said that there were 29 insurance offices doing business in the town and, as an amendment to Cr. Brake's motion, ho moved that the Council ballot the risks amongst all those offices as the firms or their
agents were ratepayers. In any case the State would get as much out of the risks being placed with other companies as it did from its own. Statistics showed that.
Cr. I. W. Moore thought that the ballot should be restricted to those? offices which had granted loans to the Council. It was pointed out that the principle that all policies be synchronised would be adhered to whatever the outcome of the discussion concerning allocation.
1 The deputy town clerk, Mr A. Fairley, pointed out that there was a lot of policies if changes of office were made. Further : f *vn agent knew that the clerical work involved in renewing would not 'get the renewal of a policy it would naturally counteract against his taking the utmost interest in getting claims settled promptly, and otherwise attending to tlic interests of the Council. After further discussion it was submitted that the risks should be let separately, Cr. Tibbits suggesting for a period of two yeais. Cr. A. D. Jack thought the period should be for three years. - » The question was disposed of in two motions, the first being that the risks be balloted for, Cr. L. J. Brake opposing it, and the next, after a debate upon the advisability of a term of three or two years, being in favour of the latter term.
