ELLIS ISLAND PACKED.

IMMIGRANT CLEARING STATION

HUNDRED INSPECTORS ENGAGED

NEW YORK, July 22, Some idea pf the prQblem of the difficulties the United States has in coping with the immigration law can bo gained by the fact that 28,000 immigrants were admitted to Ellis Island! alone during the first three weeks of July.

One hundred inspectors worked dajr and night subjecting; jaewcomers ;to minute examination. ■{ A total of 1200 immigrants, a considerable' number of whom are British* have been detained pending a decision* 1 from Washington of their cases. The larger number of these will be deported, due to the great influx of neircomers and limited quarters.

Many of the immigrants suffered great discomfort, especially dpring the. recent prolonged lieat spell,, despite the efforts' of the immigiaMou' to minimise their . suffering.—A. a«td N.Z.
