WITH INSANE CRIMINALS.
CAGED INMATES ESCAPE
ELEVEN STILL AT LARGE,

NEW YORK, July 23.
| According to a message from l Illinois, armed posses recaptured .11 but 11 of the 26 iusane criminals, many of whom are murderers, who escaped from the Illinois Criminal Insane Hospital. Two guards were stabbed and one maniac shot dead in a battle preceding 1 the escape. Seventy-flee inmates were in a open-air cage for exercise, when they attacked the guards and wrenched Jhe bars apart with wooden benches. Other guard 3 w>ho rushed to the scene prevented wholesale escapes, but 26 eluded pursuit overnight, causing panic in the surrounding neighbourhood, all the houses being barricaded. —A. and N.Z.
