Miss Dorothy Baker, who is to play at the Waiata Society's concert tonight, arrived in Whangarei this morning and is the guest of Mrs J. W. Hall.

Tlic death occurred in Auckland on Saturday of Captain James Smith; a well-known master .mariner. Captain Smith became interested in both gold and coal mining, and was one of the founders of the Hikurangi Coal Company, which commenced operations 28 years ago, and he was a director of the company at his death. For many years he had been in partnership with Captain G, McKenzie, in the firm of Smith and McKenzie, shipowners. He was allso a director of the Takapuna Tram and Ferry Company. Captain Smith Am* one of the senior trustees of the Auckland Baptist Tabernacle, and he fine' Sirs Smith had been members of the church for over 40 years. He is survived by his wife.

M.A., who will address a mooting at the Whangarei School on Saturday miming at 10.?>0, has had W distinguished career. fn 1880 he took up work under the Wanganui Education Board, and 10 years later was teaching in the Wairarapa district. In ISB4 he went ns assistant to the Te Aro School, Wellington, and after live rears there went to the Greyt-owii School as headmaster. Later he was promoted to the .headmastership at Newtown, then the biggest school under th? Wellington Education Board. In 1010 ho retired on superannuation, but found expression for his thoughts and outlet for his energies in the secretarial duties of the Educational Institute.
