WATERSIDERS SUED.
AN EMPLOYMENT PROBLEM.
NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day.
Have shipping companies the right to order off work watersiders standing by and at the same time order them back for work on the same day? was a question that was raised in Court here yesterday before Mr A. M. Mowlcra, S.M., when the Inspector of Awards
claimed penalties of £10 each against 55 watersiders, alleging thai they took pait in a strike.
The men were engaged in working the liner Opawa, but on May 8 heavy rain prevented them starting work in the morning. The men were ordered to stand by and at 10 o'clock were told to ceine back at 1 o'clock, being paid two hours' standing time, from 8 o'clock to 10 o'clock. At 1 o'clock only live men turned up.
The Magistrate said tlx at the point was a far-reaching one and he would give his decision in writing.—Press A^sn.
