Mr W. Chadwin, an ex-resident of Whangarei and member of the Whangarei Borough Council, is spending a few days in Whangarei.
Bishop Averill confirmed some *10 candidates at Christ Church, . Whangarei, yesterday morning and held another confirmation service at Maungakaramea in the afternoon. There were large congregations at these services, and Christ Church was crowded in the evening, when the Bishop preached. His Lordship will meet the Christ Church Vestry this evening, and will leavfe ror Auckland by train to-morrow.
A few days afo a cablegram from Jerusalem advised that Mr< Arthur J. Wigley, a district engineer of railways, had died as -the result of Wounds. inflicted- by assailantsnear; Jaffa. The late Mr Wigley was the youngest son of the- late Hon. T. H. Wigley, M.L.C., of Canterbury and was ah> uncle of Miss M.'Wigley of Whangarei. Deceased was educated at Waitaki High School and Canterbury College and pre-war a Public Works Department engineer at Otira and then' on the North Auckland Main. Trunk railways. He went to France as an officer in- the Tunnelling Corps and won the M.C. at Arras. After the war he joined the Royal Engineers, went to India and Was then transferred to Palestine in a semi-military capacity as district engineer in charge of a length of railway. His wife and one child are now residing in the same country. The late Mr Wigley was a well-known footballer during his earlier days in New Zealand. He was a member of,the first New Zealand University Rugby team, which toured Australia in 1908 and represented Canterbury College and also played the game in North Auckland. 'He married Miss V. Ronayne, of Yowghal, County Cork, a niece of Mr T.. Ronyne", ' a former general manager of New Zealand Railways.
