FIRE TRAGEDY.

YOUNG WOMAN S"JFIX>CATED. J RESCUE EFORTS FUTILE. WELLINGTON, This Day. About 7.30 last night smoke was seen issuing from the roof of the Y.WjC.A. hostel in Mac Donald Crescent by some young men. Almost uaj ".mediately the screaks of a woman •were heard coming from the affected part. The young men entered the building, rushed upstairs and called out, but received no response, though screams continued. Two of the young men cjawled through the smoke, but were tnwible to enter the room from where the screams proceeded, •owing to the flames. When the fire -teas subdued the body of a young woman named Miss Goury, 23 years of Age f was recovered. She had evidently &ied of suffocation, as her clothes were -intact. Tie origin of the lire in theY.W.C.A. Hostel in Mac Donald Crescent remains * mystery. The young woman victim arrived from Sydney by the Ulimaroa only yesterday morning, and was , to fore proceeded this morning to her flestin&'tion, w"hi<S3i at present is unknown. Immigrants to arrive by the Rotorua to-day were to have been accommodated •ct-'l&l "tewterto-iiiglit, but the authorities state that accommodation will now be found for them elsewhere. Great difficulty in reaching the seait of the fire was experienced by the -brigade, and asthe nearest water hydrant is located in Wellington Terrace a considerable length of hose was required, thus causing delay.—'Press Assm
