OAMARU BY-ELECTION.
MR MASSEY'S ITINERARY. DOMINION'S HIGH STANDARD. OAMARU, This Day. Speaking here last night the Prime Minister said we had ended the most satisfactory year probably that this country had ever seen He proceeded to refer to the improvement in the banking returns for the March quarter, stating that the excess of deposits was now nearly £1,000,000. The exports for last year were worth £43,000,- , 000 and the imports were valued at £37,000,000, so that Ave were £6,000,0uu on the right side. The public accounts and private accounts were improving all along the line and the recuperative powers of the country were something wonderful. The Government had done all it could to assist the producers. "There were two things that every Government had to do—keep the credit of the country good and keep the country prosperous. He did not know but that the credit of the New Zealand Government ; today was even bettor than that of the Imperial Government itself.—Press Assn.
