Y.M.C.A.

LOCAL PROGRESS

APPEAL TO MEMBERS,

A special appeal to local members *of the Y.M.C.A. has been made by the executive for promises of financial assistance, if called upon, by way of loans of £10, free of interest for twelve months, to be paid in sums of £2 at intervals of two months, and to Ibe refunded as a first call on funds -raised in the campaign, which will be launched when times arc better to get 'the wherewithal to build. In the covering circular it is stated that at a meeting of the looal Board of Directors held on 24th inst., correspondence from national headquarters in Wellington was read by Hhe president, Colonel C. E. R. Maekesv. The position as outlined by Mr Varney, the national general secretary, was to the effect that owing to the big financial burden the national committee is ■ carrying in New Zealand, and to the fact that the present slump in the money market has temporarily cut off their sources of revenue, and thereby Tendered them unable to give the desired assistance, it had become necessary for the local association to raise its own finances until the time It was explained that that actually -meant that to continue activities in preparing for a big effort in October of this year the local executive must make provision for the sum of approximately £?.")0. Means by which this amount could be raised were dis- J cussed at the meeting, with the Tesult that it was resolved to solicit interim assistance as defined. The executive trusted that there •would be a liberal response from members who were, it was felt, whole-heart-edly with the executive in the project. It was emphasised that the money so promised and lent would be refunded immediately the campaign had been held, and that at the present time the executive was merely asking that members would, if necessary, help them through a difficult period which would •not have arisen had the stringency of the money market not caused them to postpone the dates of the campaign Originally fixed for April. The executive felt that members were •sufficiently interested in the young men and boys of this community to comply with, the request and thereby to make it possible for them to continue * •work which the world over had greatly assisted in the building up of ;-trong men and good citizens.
