THE PAPACY

KEEN CONTROVERSY

ON ITALIAN QUESTION.

FOREIGNER MAY SUCCEED.

(Received 9.40 a.m.)

ROME, Jan. 28

Interest in the election of a Pope is growing. The issue lies in the «trong division between the Italian members of the Sacred College on the lioman question, with Cardinal Ratti at the head of the irreconcilables, and Cardinal Gasparri, who inclines towards reconciliation with Italv.

This division gives rise to speculation as to whether a foreigner may not be chosen from the Cardinals representing neutral European States.

It is not expected that more than 57 Cardinals will participate in the election, of whom Si will be Italians. If one of the latter is chosen it will have to be one not associated with the extremist views of either party on the Italian question.—A. and N.Z.
