SCHOOL PICNIC.

A HAPPY OUTING,

EVENTUATES AT OPUAWHANGA

The annual picnic of the Opuiiwhanga school was held in Mr F. B. Whi,mp "s paddock on Thursday last. The management left nothing to be desired in the running of the picnic, hut the committee was extremely unfortunate in that after two months' dry 'weather it struck weather that, while not wet, was very threatening and prevented a large number of people from coming. However, quite a fair number turned out, and those present thoroughly enjoyed thoniHelves. A tennis court did much to it<ld to the eiijoyment of those enthusiasts. The cake-guessing competition (the cake being given by Mrs J. Bisvset) was, Avon by Mr D. G. Jones and Mr G. Thomas, who tied in guessing the correct, weight. The sheop weight-guessing competition (the sheep being lent for the occasion by Mr J. O'Hagan) was won ;by Miss E. O'Hagan. Each school child was presented with a book.

The main attractions, of course, were the races. The hnndicappers, Messrs G. Billing'ton and S. W. Smith, carried out their onerous duties in a capable mani-er, the result of the handicapping being many close finishes, Mr J. O'Hagan acted as starter, Mr <C. J. 0. Powell being judge.
