TELEGRAPH CHARGES.
DEPARTMENT LOSING MONEY.
OLD PRACTICE ADVOCATED.
(Special to "Northern AdvoCate.") WELLINGTON, This Day. Mr Clutha Mackenzie asked the Post-master-General in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon if he would reduce the telegraph charges so that the old principle of low charges and increased turnover might be tested. This principle appeared to have been overlooked in recent years. If it were successful the same principle might be'applied to other services. The Hon. J. G. Coates replied that during a period of six months the new telegraph charges had reduced the volume of business by 13 per cent, and increased the revenue 75 per cent. There was a substantial loss on the handling of telegrams and his present task was to make the Post Office pay its way. When that had been done he would be prepared to make concessions to the public.
