SUCCESS ACHIEVED

The Whangarei citizens who . paid a visit of inspection yesterday to the Harbour Board's dredge seem to have been exceedingly pleased with what they eaw, When the Board contracted to construct a road for the Whangarei County Council by pumping spoil from the riverbed there were pessimists who said that the task was impossible, and the delay that occurred before the dredge began operations justified, temporarily at least, their pessimism. But once the dredge really settled down to work the prophets of evil were confounded. In a remarkably short space of time the contract with the County Council has .been fulfilled. Apart altogether from the question of the ultimate success of road-making by means of a dredge, the Harbour Board's dredge has done well and truly the work that it was intended to do. That point is not open to doubt; it has been shown that the dredge is fully capable of coing the work required by the Harbour Board. It will be very gratifying to the members of the Board to know that their purchase of the dredge and then expenditure upon it has been jusfied and that the Board possesses a, -thoroughly satisfactory asset. It must be gratifying also to the public to know that the Board has a dredge which is capable of fulfilling the requirements of the harbour improvement scheme. The Board, no doubt, will .find an early opportunity of making public a statement .that will show the .cos-t cf the dredging operations as well as the nature of the work that has been done, and if the operating cost of k the 'dredge proves to be reasonable, as we telieve it will, everyone will be satisfied. A dredge that can do work that is essential to the improvement of the harbour, and can do it at a fair cost, is a very good thing for the Harbour Board to have.
