HIGH SCHOOL PRIZES.
We have the pleasure of publishing to-day a very .welcome letter from a correspondent who sluares our view that the Board of Governors of the Whangarei High School has done the wrong thing in deciding to give no prizes to the pupils this year. Our correspondent has put the case for prizes so eloquently and lucidly that we need not attempt to "ra verse his remarks, which surely should .convince the most hardhearted economiser of the error of hisway. But we wish to thank our friend for his very practical contribution as well -as his aptlv phrased opinions. He has enclosed in his letter the sum of £1 Is as a donation to the "prize fund." Although the principal of the High School, for wihose opii. ion we have the deepest respect, has expressed himself as unfavourable to 'the method of "taking the hat round," we hope that he and the members of the Board will bear with our correspondent and ourselves and will accepts any subscriptions tiiat miay be 'offered. It will give us great pleasure •■to 1 &nd our friend's donation to the Board, and we shall be glad .to receive other gifts for the same purpose.
