TEACHER'S RESIDENCE. The wheels of the red tape machine, if left to themselves, turn with a qaite exasperating slowness. However, in ihe vexed matter of the provision of a teacher's residence for Onerahi the rci-essary fdlip to stir .them out of their usual gait has not been wanting. ?r;d the question has been kept well to the fore, so far wit-h gratifying results. Mr McGrath, the headmaster, has received a communication from the Aiicklancl Education Board, with an enclosure from the Education Department, to the effect tliat the Lands and Survey Department had iiow to vithdtaw Sec. 270 from the sale of leases to form a site for the teacher's residence. It is further stater that, as so6h as the title to the land is vested in the Board, that, body will issue immediate instructions to its architect to proceed to shift the residence now on Limestone Island and xecrect it on the site chosen. Sec. 270, Litherto known as the school horsepaddock, though far behind the section asked for, on Stevens' Pt, as a dwelling site, is at least, infinitely preferable io the rented locality now in occupation. The School Committee has not been granted all it sought, but let us be thankful for small merices. Tfie iongdolayed, slow-moving business soems apparently in measurable distance of „ completion. CHURCH SOCIAL. e The gift social in aid of Church building funds, held in the Town Hall or. Friday, was ain unqualified success. The quests, including visitors from Whangarei, Portland,' Tamaterau and a«d elsewhere, numbered well on to 150 -and all present put in a night of keen enjoyment. There was a voluminous array of gifts, covering a wide range of kind and value. Vegetables, eggs, butter, etc., fine specimens of needlework and daintily-worked garments de luxe—the choice was legion. vln a place of honour was found a Christmas cake, to make one's mouth water, a real .-:ugiire3 gem of confectionery arts, donated by Mr Graham for the youngsters' Christmas tree, and Mr Johnson of Waikaraka has promised .to provide a lamb to swell the feast. The perishable goods among tae pfts put up for .sale during the evening found ready purchase, and the remainder will be kept in hand for the projected bazaar. Messrs. Dickey, of Tamaterau, contributed songs, to heighten enjoyment, the well rendered items being applauded to the echo, and with, all sorts of fun the time passed very pleasantly. Supper was provided and enjoyed and afterwards a very enjoyable dance came as a fitting wind-up. This was kept up with unflagging zeal vrolKinto the "wee sma' 'oors'' and dewn was not far distant when the last revellers wended their homeward way. Miss F. Skellern presided at the piano, during the dance, while Mr Dickey asted as M.C.
