SOCIAL AT MAUNGAKARAMEA,
OLD SETTLERS LEAVING
(Own Correspondent)
A large number of residents of this and surrounding districts were present at the public hall on Tuesday night to say good-by e to Mr. and Mrs. F. O'Carroll and Miss O'Carroll, who are leaving 'Karamea to take up their residence in Auckland. Dancing, interspersed with musical items, was the order of the evening.
After the supper interval Mr. L. P. Adams said h e was sorry that the district was losing more of its old settlers. Mr. O'Carroll had been born and bred in the district and had helped in many ways to convert the virgin bush into the advanced settlement of ,to-day. Mr. O'Carroll had also been of great assistance in sporting circles and his prowess as a cricketer was well known. The speaker also referred to the kindly disposition of Mrs. O'Carroll and the part she had taken in all local functions. He wished them long lif e and every prosperity in their new home. Mr. Adams then called on Mr. W. Crawford to make a presentation to the guests of the evening. Mr. Crawford said h e had been called the "Father of Maungakaramea," and he looked on Mr. O'Carroll as one of his sons. He fully endorsed all the previous speaker had said and he much regretted their departure. On behalf of the residents and as a slight token of esteem he asked Mr. and Mrs. O'Carroll to accept a silver cake stand, and Miss O'Carroll a silver-mounted fountain pen. Mr. O'Carroll, on behalf of his wife and family, thanked thos e present for the gifts, also for the social evening tendered to them. "For They are Jolly Good Fellows,"' followed by " Auld Lang Syne" were then heartily sung by all present, three hearty cheers also being given.
