AND BACKBLOCKS SETTLERS.
IMPORTANT POINT RAISED
(Special Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, This Day.
"Provision is made ®t t2ie present time for the payment of a subsidy of 6d per lb. to dairy farmers supplying butter to dairy factories , , but no provision has been made for <th e payment of this subsidy to the small farmer in the baekblocks, where ther e -are in'o dairy factories," said Mr R. Masters (Stratford) in the House. The member wished to know whether farmers producing separator ibutter in places where there were no factories would be granted thet same 'Concession as those living im more favoured parts.
The Prime Miimisit&r replied that he was not to make a (definite staitemient on the matter at the moment, though he appreciated the point raised. He thought ,that people who were, not within reach of 'a creamery or factory require.d some encouragement, since upon them (the country would in part depend for its , supply of butter in years to come. He would Like to put tihem in the same position as other butter producers, if it could ibe done, but he would first have *o inqu'iire what was .the quantity of butter produced by snralil men in the backblocks and whe/tiher. the butter was fit for export. He would look into the .matter and make a statement to the House.
