TOTALISATOR CONTROVERSY.
EXTRA PERMITS OPPOSED
BY COUNCIL OF CHURCHES.
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
At a meeting of th c Council of Churches to-night th c following motion was carried: (1) " That in view of the serious social and economic evils inflicted on the community by the number of totalisator permits already in existence, this council of churches views with alarm the fact that by a majority of more than two to one Parliament voted to increase the number by 38. () This council further tenders its hearty thanks to those members of Parliament, led by Mr. Isitt and Mr. McCombs, who opposed th e Bill with such pluck and determination as to necessitate its withdrawal at th c Committee stage. (3) As the Prime Minister, in* substitution for the Bill, has proposed to set up a Royal Commission to deal with the question of the number and distribution of racing permits, the council further urges that any suggested increase by such a commission should be stoutly resisted as being a scandalous reflection on the need, emphasised by the Prime Ministr himself for increasing thrift and productiveness."
