OFFICIAL PROSPERITY.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—l congratulate the Whangarei Harbour Board on bringing in and starting a "season w of official ',prosperity." It was ■up to them to do it; it is the logical sequence of much thought and effort on their part. Wβ have been oft told of "prosperity" coming to us. It has been sung in prose, and in verse, of the "greatness," the "deepness," and, shall I say "cheapness" of our harbour; and who more deserving, and what more fitting than that the "officials" should be the first to taste this prosperity, which is coming to all of us? If there should by any remote chance be any from the "inlets" or the "waybacks" who do not see the full extent of their good fortune, I say just they go home and keep an eye on their .sections, as it ha.-; been confidently predicted that they (the sections) will in the general "prosperity" rise to double value. The exact date is not given, which is unfortunate, but no doubt the present official prosperity is merely a foretaste, or pointer, as it were, showing the direction from whence the full breeze of "prosperity" will come.

I observe also another point in which the Harbour Board have carefully conserved the public interest, viz., they have fixed the salaries of the officials so they cannot get another increase for over four years. Before that time the work may be very strenuous, and it is much to the credit of the officials that they murmured

not. Another point I would like to stress in favour of the Harbour Board is the considerate manner in which they have relieved the next Board who may be elected of a vast amount of work; the scheme of works is all laid out, the salaries fixed, the loan moneys will be, qn tap, to carry on and the soothing effects of "prosperity" •everywhere in evidence; apparently only sleeping -accommodation ■will, be required by the next Board. *Again I congratulate the present Board and officials on the upward and forward movement. — lam, etc.,

A. CARTER,
