SUICIDE IN GAOL.
YOUNG MAOKI'S END
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A prisoner named John Levi, aged 24 years, a Maori belonging to Eapaki pa; who appeared at the Lytteltotf Magistrate's Court on a charge of unlawful interference "with a Maori girl under the age of 16, w!as found dead in his cell at Lytteltpn gaol, his throat being cut. At the inquest the gaoler said that the regulation bread knife, among other things, was issuod to Levi. R& seemed quite normal. When witness visited the cells, tit 6.10 p.m., he found Levi dead, lying face downwards on the mattress.
The Coroner recorded a verdict of suicide, adding that the gaol authorities had no knowledge of any suicidal tendencies on the part of the deceased. —Press Assn.
