THE JE RSEY

Stintnlf'iNPnt to " The Northern Advocate." M'ham/arci, NZ . June 2-inl 10*0

I "Does it Tay to Select and Breed ? j GEO%GE HODGSON'S HERP I 1 Kaimamaku, Whakapara I J A Typical Pure-bred Jersey Herd Up till ton years ago Geo. Hodgson, of K.-iiniamaku, near Whakapara, had a mixed Dairy Herd from which lie obtained ordinary average results. He tli -n made up his mind to go in for Dairying on scientific and proper lines. His decision at that.time to-go-in entirely for Jerseys was the result, of observations made with his own" cattle. The few Jerseys that he possessed gave the results whic-i (compared with the other breeds) caused him to make this decision. The motto made then, nam-ly to allow no one to pick a beast from his herd, young or old, was never departed from, but he had paid as much as one hundred guineas a head to get good cows from other breeders. He did his own selecting entirely and never allowed what he believed to be a good cow to pass him no matter wh.u she cost so long as the value was there. To-day the most of his herd are of his own breeding.

THE BULL. Mr Hodgson early realised that the bull was half the herd. This knowledge came to him not from what be had heard or read but from practical experience. His own failures taught bint that a bull will not give results unless he has the butter fat strain behind him. His bull was 'Jp\ Humble Bee, a photo of which appears elsewhere in this issue. Bumble Bee was by Sailor Boy M\ (imported) out of Bees Wing, a one time Champion at the Auckland Show. WW Shamrock of Beachlands, by Brighton Twilish out of Golden Swan's Maid, a daughter ol Sp Golden Swan (an imported bull) was his second sire. (Golden Swan's Maid had a certificate for 541 \\\l lbs. of fat as a three-year-old.) I His next bull was a son of Golden Swan out of Lady Starlock, a cow also with a registered '' certificate" for'butter fat production Mr Hodgson has always been willing to pay the price for quality and the^ results ot his present herd given on pages 2 and 3 are a fair indication as to whether it pay** to go in for the best. The Tests were made by Mr McKenzie, Testing Expert for the Hikurangi Dairy Company. Two periods are given, namely, for the months of March and May, the latter being practically the last month of the milking season. Those who study the table should take particularly into uT consideration the age of cow, the date of calving, and the record.
