Before Mr E. Page S.M., in the Wellington Magistrate's Court H. j Webster, picture dealer, was charged with a breach of the Indecent Publications Act, 1910. The court was asked to determine whether a picture entitled "The Sorceress" was indecent. The Magistrate held that the picture of a nude woman was not in itself indecent, but attitude or some other objectionable feature may make it so. "I don't know whether it is advisable to exhibit such a picture in a shop window,'" added the magistrate. He was not, however, able to hold that the picture was indecent and to order its destroyal or the defendant to be fined.
