FIRE SENSATION.
ABOARD MAIL BOAT
ON NORTHERN WAIROA RIVER
DARGAVILLE, This Day
The mail boat "Wairua had a narrow escape from being destroyed by fire when coming to Dargaville this morning. When passing Mount Rex last evening smoke was noticed coming from the coal bunkers. The crew put the fire out, but when passing Toka Toka fire again broke out .The engineer pliuckily stuck to his engine, although the heat from' the fire was intense, and brought the burning boat to Dargaville wharf, where the fire brigade was called out. The firemen had to go into the hold, and after some hours got the fire under control. The fire burned through two skins, leaving only the outer skin which was charred. Half an inch more and the fire would have burned through. Had there been a draught there was no hope of sav'ng the vessel.—Press Assn.
