LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Since authorisation was given at the annual meeting of the Racing Club to raise membership by 100, there have been 26 new members elected, and th 6 nominal roll of the club now stands at 266.

Owners and trainers of race horses will not be allowed to us e Kensington Park for training purposes until such time as the Racing Club see fit, owing to the half-formed condition of the track. In future, also, the club will not hold itself liable for accidents arising from training operations at the park.

Members of the A and P. Society have entered upon a plan to ensure the next show being more successful than any of its predecessors. One committee has been appointed to revise the schedule of classes throughout and another to go into the matter of making considerable alterations to th e shee P and cattle show pens, to modernise and enlarge them, and to obtain the Borough Council's cooperation towards that end.

To encourage competition in judging the points of horses, cattle and sheep at the Whangarei A. and P. Show, Messrs Worsp Bros, have presented a silver cup for competition. The president of th e A. and P. Society, Mr D. J. Finlayson, and Messrs J J. Fraser, A. J. Mackay and E. G. W Tibbits will draft conditions covering the competition and they will be submitted to the doners of the cup before being adopted by the society.

With a view to making satisfactory arrangements on behalf of the three bodies interested in connection with the proposed alterations at Kensington Park, emanating from the Racing Club, the Borough Council will be asked to conven c a conference to discuss the proposals. Messrs D. J. Finlayson, A F. Thompson and A. J. Mackay will represent the A and P. Society and Messrs R. G. Hosking, M. G. King* andA. Smith the Racing Club

As an outcome of th e movement amongst racing clubs to secure restoration of permits which were curtailed by the restrictive legislation of 1910, the Whangarei Racing Club, taking into account the increased population of the North, has applied for an autumn meeting for Whangarei. The formal application, which has been forwarded to the Racing Conference, suggests May 5 and 6 as dates for the autumn meeting, but th c decision on that point rests with the conference. If the application is granted, ther c will be four days' racing in a year in Whangarei.

It was decided, after a short discussion at the Borough Council meeting last evening, to agree to the uplifting of the reservation of 130 acres of the 1636 acres of the water conservation reserve along the Three Mile Bush road, provided that by so doing the Council would be absolved from liability for fencing. The engineer had reported that the area in question did not affect the Whau Valley water supply, and was not required by the Council. Cr. Pickmere put in a word of caution concerning parting with any area which was part of what might become a notional park.
