APPEAL TO FARMERS.
MORE YOUNG STOCK
THE WHEAT POSITION
A note of warning was sounded by ;he Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. W. Nosworthy, when opening the Waikato Winter Show, in respect to the enormous destruction of calves in th e dairying districts of th e Dominion. He strongly urged the farmers to rear more young stock. The value of such a policy would be realised in the event of any drop in the price of dairy products or decline in land values. ' . The necessity for increased wheat production was also emphasised by the Minister. He said the Waikato was once noted for its grain production, but in recent years this branch of farming had been neglected. The Dominion was now largely dependent on Australia for wheat. In th e event of a severe drought in that country there would be a serious shortage not only of wheat but also of valuable by-products in the shape of bran arid pollard. As" Minister £$r Agriculture he was striving his ut-, most to make and keep the country eelf-sustained in regard to foodstuffs. He appealed 'to Waikato farmers grow as much grain as possible, as nil that could be grown in th e country would be required.
