FOOD SHORTAGE.
A DISQUIETING OUTLOOK,
(Received 8 a.m.)
LONDON Dec. 18. Mr McCurdy, of the Ministry of Food, addressing a conference of Labour members and local food committees, said there would he a serious shortage of essential! foodstuffs in 1920. Butter was almost disappearing. Experts predicted that 1920 would be the most critical year since the start of tb c war as regards butter and cheese. The tea supplies had decreased, though consumption had increased. There was no prospect of the world's supply of sugar balancing the demands. ' There was a surplus of meat in Britain at present, but there would be a world shortage in 1920. It was essential to again control bacon, because prices bounded, and bacon deteriorated when th e control was removed. —Times.
