THE FIRST WESTERNER.

SMITH COMPLETES THE TEST

(Received 9.30 a.m.)

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 21

Captain Smith has arrived here, being the first Western starter to somplete in the trans-continental air race.—A. and N.Z.

Writing of the entrants for the big air race to Australia, the London correspondent of the Sydney "Sun" says:—Captain Mathews and Sergeant Kay will be the first away. They are only awaiting the delivery of spare parts. "Given a very big element of luck," says Mathews, "the flight i s possible in 30 days, but the Commonwealth has surrounded the competitors with ridiculous conditions. There should have been a relay mail-carrying demonstration. Then the flight would have been possible in seven or eight days. However I am confident that I will get there some day, preparing the way for quicker flights in the future." Mathews regards the variety of the climatic conditions as the chief hindrance to success.
